Maurits Smeyers (1937-1999) was a Belgian art historian and full professor at KU Leuven. He founded Illuminare in 1983, which was first established as a study centre for medieval book illumination. Professor Smeyers was a celebrated expert of medieval art, notably of Flemish book illumination, pre-Eyckian painting and Jan van Eyck. His extensive archives were donated to Illuminare in 2011. Much of the documentation relates to his important, but never-published dissertation Het Turijns-Milanees getijdenboek. Bijdrage tot de Van Eyck-studie (The Turin-Milan Book of Hours. A Contribution to the Study of Van Eyck). If you would like to consult the archives or if you wish to receive the latest inventory (which is still a work in progress), do not hesitate to contact us via illuminare@kuleuven.be.
