Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art was established in 1983 as the Centre for the Study of Flemish Illuminators by Maurits Smeyers (1937-1999), professor at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and an authority on manuscripts and miniatures. From the outset the centre concentrated on the study of illumination in the Southern Netherlands. Since September 2008 the study centre has been called Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art.
